ASUS K501LX-EB71 is a sturdy all aluminium design 15.6 inch Full HD screen laptop as part of the K series with the latest generation ultra low voltage i7 processor, smooth running NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M graphics, large and fast solid state drive, a total of 4 USB ports (two of each) and more. It is designed to handle new and old games and demanding software with no problems and seems to be well worth its price tag and probably the only type of people that it wouldn’t satisfy would be the heavy gamers.

ASUS K501LX-EB71 comes with the 5th generation dual core Intel i7-5500U at 2.4GHz speed up to 3GHz with turbo boost and hyper threading for smart 4-way processing, 8GB DDR3L SDRAM that offers great multitasking capability and can be expanded up to 12GB by replacing the 4GB stick by an 8GB, 256GB Solid State Drive as decent size storage and great speed (for fast boot ups in just ten seconds/waking up from hibernation and opening files much quicker than regular SATA) and Windows 8.1 operating system that you can replace with Windows 10 for free by the end of July- the first release of Windows 10.

15.6 inch FHD matte non-touch display with 1920 x 1080 pixel maximum screen resolution equals to very sharp images with vibrant colors and has the with TN (Twisted Nematics) panel which doesn’t offer as large viewing angles as IPS panel. Graphics card is the latest NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M discrete GPU with 2G GDDR3 that supports DirectX 11) that makes it a pretty good gaming machine but with the toughest latest games you’ll need to reduce the settings and will be able to achieve lower frame rates per second (overall you can play any game with it but at varying resolutions and settings). It offers great sound via Asus SonicMaster and stereo speakers and comes with a VGA webcam for casual Skype chats with family and friends.

Dark blue Asus K501LX with premium brushed metal finish and nice to touch surfaces weighs 4.4 pounds with dimensions of 10 x 15 x 0.90 inches- thin, lightweight and portable. It has a backlit chiclet keyboard with 10-key numeric pad and a functional touchpad underneath and a 3-cell 48Wh lithium ion battery for up to 4 hours battery life in light to average use. Connectivity options include the faster and better coverage 802.11ac wireless + Bluetooth 4.0 adapter, 10/100/100 Gigabit Ethernet, 2 x USB 3.0 ports (marked with a blue connector), 2 x USB 2.0 ports, an HDMI output to connect to HDTV or a monitor and an SD Card Reader. It doesn’t have an optical DVD drive as it is quite a slim machine so you just need to get an external DVD Drive cheaply and connect it to one of the USB ports.

Conclusion: Aluminum shell ASUS K501LX-EB71 is a high end laptop with nice features, all aluminum durable build (but very slim) and technical specs with an ultra low voltage i7 processor (Broadwell i7-5500U is about 15% faster than the i5-5200U), Full HD display, fast wireless, 4 x USB ports, 256GB SSD (no HDD- large 256GB solid state drive is on 2.5 inch SATA and you will not need to change the standard HDD to SSD like on most models), 8GB memory (there is another empty slot for adding memory so you can expand it up to 12GB), 12 month international Asus warranty including Accidental Damage Protection and more at a reasonable price (not cheap and not expensive). It has less bloatware than other models, battery is not removable by the user and is only a 3-cell one so the battery life is reasonable but not amazing. At 4.4 pound weight it has to be one of the lightest 15 inch notebooks on the market and we like the backlit keyboard with comfy keys, 10-key numpad and a responsive touchpad. Lack of DVD drive can be a problem to some but external drives don’t cost much at all these days and you have a very slim laptop here and battery is not the replaceable sort and to go into the machine you’d be voiding the warranty. Quite frankly we couldn’t find much wrong and the quality is rather high on this machine with only small cons, and generally speaking Asus is one of the top computer brands in the world (probably the best if you don’t count Apple).
